چکیده

The Orientale impact basin is the youngest and most well-preserved of lunar multi-ring basins. generally ring structures facies are distinctly anomalous in southwestern quadrant; outer Cordillera extends significantly outward, Outer Inner Rook mountain rings more poorly developed show characteristics, Montes Formation varies widely from its characteristics elsewhere interior. Based on gravity, image, topography data, we confirmed that southwest region represents location a pre-existing ~320 km rim–crest diameter peak–ring centered at 108.8°W, 28.4°S, characterized by an ~170 diameter. We model structure morphology this large pre-Orientale (about one-third Orientale) presence negative relief had distinctive influence development (disrupting otherwise circular continuity causing radial excursions their locations) emplacement ejecta (causing filling low represented basin, creating surface textures, resulting late stage movement response to topography. preservation Bouguer anomaly strongly suggest rim crest excavation cavity lies or within Mountain ring.

Ring faults and ring dikes around the Orientale basin on the Moon

The Orientale basin is the youngest and best-preserved multiring impact basin on the Moon, having experienced only modest modification by subsequent impacts and volcanism. Orientale is often treated as the type example of a multiring basin, with three prominent rings outside of the inner depression: the Inner Rook Montes, the Outer Rook Montes, and the Cordillera. Here we use gravity data from ...

Formation of the Orientale lunar multiring basin.

Multiring basins, large impact craters characterized by multiple concentric topographic rings, dominate the stratigraphy, tectonics, and crustal structure of the Moon. Using a hydrocode, we simulated the formation of the Orientale multiring basin, producing a subsurface structure consistent with high-resolution gravity data from the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) spacecraft. T...

Numerical modeling of the ejecta distribution and formation of the Orientale basin on the Moon

The formation and structure of the Orientale basin on the Moon has been extensively studied in the past; however, estimates of its transient crater size, excavated volume and depth, and ejecta distribution remain uncertain. Here we present a new numerical model to reinvestigate the formation and structure of Orientale basin and better constrain impact parameters such as impactor size and veloci...

Thickness of proximal ejecta from the Orientale Basin from Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) data: Implications for multi‐ring basin formation

[1] Quantifying the ejecta distribution around large lunar basins is important to understanding the origin of basin rings, the volume of the transient cavity, the depth of sampling, and the nature of the basin formation processes. We have used newly obtained altimetry data of the Moon from the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) instrument to estimate the thickness of ejecta in the region surr...

The Crustal Structure of Orientale and Implications for Basin

Introduction. The topography [1] and gravity [2] of the Moon are dominated by the signatures of impact basins and the mascon gravity anomalies contained within. A method of generating higher resolution crustal thickness models by utilizing the symmetry of the basins is here presented, providing a refined view of the subsurface structure of the basins, with a focus on Orientale. The crustal stru...
